History of Filmfare Awards
- The inaugural awards ceremony took place on 21st March 1954 at the Metro theatre Mumbai and first introduced by the Filmfare Magazine of the Times Group which is one of the oldest and most popular film magazine in India.
- The primary purpose of the awards was to recognize and celebrate excellence in various aspects of filmmaking, including acting, directing, music, and more.
- The categories for recognizing the excellence in Filmfare awards include Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and more
- The first movie which won the Best Film award, was “Do Bigha Zamin” directed By Bimal Roy.
Do you how who was behind the name of Filmfare awards?
It was Clare Mendonca, a film critic, with Times of India and Evening News of India. She was Elected Vice President of the Film Journalists Association in Bombay in 1939. After her early death in 1953, she war honored with Clare awards, later on award was named as Filmfare awards and instituted in 1954. The post of Vice president was shared with Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. During the period Baburao Patel was elected President.
Why the award is called black lady award?
The history behind the award was being called black lady award is associated with Clare Mendonca, because of her outstanding work as the critic of films and she was silhouetted the film industry with her finest work. Black is often associated with sophistication and a sense of elegance. Over the years, the Filmfare Awards and the “Black Lady” statuette have become highly prestigious within the Indian film industry.
